The team, coached by Brett Ormsby, beat Los Angeles Water Polo Club this morning then soundly defeated Regency Water Polo Club this afternoon to win the title game 11-5. Congratulations also to Ryder Roberts from Del Mar Water Polo Club who was selected as the Ironman Water Polo Most Valuable Player for 2011. Great job boys!

Congrats to the 16 & Under Boys from Del Mar Water Polo Club who registered a victory this morning against Rosebowl Water Polo Club in the 2nd round of the Ironman Water Polo Superfinals Tournament in Orange County. The team from Del Mar Water Polo Club was granted a bye in the first round for their excellent performance throughout the season, earning them a #2 overall seed in the Superfinals Tournament. Intro To Water Polo in San Diego, CA
Del Mar Water Polo Club just completed a highly successful ‘Intro to Water Polo’ camp yesterday. Del Mar Water Polo is an established youth sports club based in San Diego, CA, dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of water polo technique to boys and girls ages 6-18. There was a very generous turnout by many San Diego boys and girls who are interested in learning the wonderful game of water polo for the first time. The water polo camp was run by Del Mar’s own Thalia Ormsby along with several other Del Mar Water Polo Club coaches and alumni players. We hope all of you who participated enjoyed the experience and are now seriously considering water polo as your chosen sport.

“A great way to become a better water polo player is to watch the best players in the world play. Every young kid should spend some time every week watching video of international water polo to pick up some of the skills that top-flight professionals use. This is something that is definitely lacking in the United States water polo community. I think a great way to put this in prospective is to think about other major sports in America. Right now the NBA playoffs are going on, and I would guarantee that every future NBA star 5, 10, 15 years down line is watching Kobe, and Lebron, and Durant and then going to the gym the next day and emulating the moves they saw their favorite star make the night before. Unfortunately, in water polo the vast majority of our kids don’t even know who the sports’ stars are, let alone what they can do in a water polo game. Stay tuned for our soon to be released series of water polo tips from the founder and head coach of Del Mar Water Polo Club, Brett Ormsby! Coach Ormsby is one of the most well known water polo players and coaches in all of San Diego. He was a San Diego high school standout in water polo before playing for the UCLA Men’s water polo team. He went on to win an NCAA Water Polo Championship with UCLA. He was also selected as a member of the USA Men’s Olympic Water Polo Team. With this type of water polo experience, Brett Ormsby is considered one of, if not, the most knowledgeable water polo coaches in all of San Diego. In an effort to raise the standards of water polo in San Diego, Coach Ormsby is going to post his own personal water polo tips in series of periodical blog entries. Congrats to the Del Mar Water Polo Club 14 year old girls for a bronze medal performance today at the 2011 San Diego County Cup water polo tournament. The Del Mar girls water polo team was in the ‘A’ division and soundly beat Diablo Water Polo Club 9 to 5 this morning to take home a medal. Del Mar girls standout, Katie Nelson, was also selected to the County Cup All-Tournament Team. Great job Katie! The girls team from Del Mar Water Polo Club should be proud of their efforts over the last few days in one of the largest and most competitive water polo tournaments in the state. As of today they are in first place in this very competitive water polo league that includes some of the best water polo clubs in all of southern California. Several past players from Del Mar Water Polo are now playing for various NCAA water polo teams – including several collegiate club teams that are slated to participate in the upcoming Fisher Cup. Come watch one of the most competitive water polo tournaments in the country and see some of Del Mar Water Polo’s alumni in action.
San Diego Water Polo in Ironman Water Polo League
Many people have asked why some of the other San Diego water polo club teams are not competing in the Ironman Water Polo League. The answer is that Del Mar Water Polo is the only San Diego water polo team that was invited to play in this year’s grueling league. Head coach and founder, Brett Ormsby, knew that having Del Mar Water Polo participate in such a prestigious water polo league was a unique opportunity. Up until now, there have been no San Diego water polo clubs in the Ironman Water Polo League. Since Del Mar Water Polo Club was established, their name and reputation has been growing exponentially. Such positive growth and success resulted in their invitation to join the Ironman Water Polo League. Before Del Mar Water Polo was asked to join, the league was largely composed of various top clubs from in and around Los Angeles and Orange County. To date, Del Mar Water Club has represented San Diego water polo well – the 16 & unders are near the top of the league standings as of this blog entry and hungry to go far into the playoffs. Del Mar Water Polo founder Brett Ormsby is pleased to announce the hiring of Olympian and Hall of Famer, Gubba Sheehy!
Coach Sheehy will officially begin with the club on February 28, 2011. In addition to taking over as the head women’s coach this spring season, she will also be working with the Del Mar Water Polo boys teams. Club founder Brett Ormsby says “Coach Sheehy as a player and coach brings a vast knowledge of experience to our players. She is well known and respected in San Diego and in the water polo community nationally.” Coach Sheehy was a silver medalist in the 2000 Olympics and most recently inducted into the Water Polo Hall of Fame. She has been involved with coaching at the Women’s National “B” team and currently in the ODP program. Welcome Coach Sheehy!
